Question:
You should VERY cautious about prolonged use of prednisone at any dose. I took it to treat nasal polyps perhaps every three months for a number of years. I developed avascular necrosis of the hip joints, a horrible side effect of which my doctor did not warn. Currently, in the US, there is no cure for vascular necrosis other than major bone surgery or hip replacement. BE CAREFUL. Jim
Response:
Most patients with polyps are allergic to aspirin and all aspirin related products. Maybe this is why these keep coming back? Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com tell a friend Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com
Response:
I am scheduled for my fourth polyp surgery in 6 years next month. I am also told by doctors at Northwestern Univ. here in Chicago that the polyps will stop coming back eventually but that the timing is unpredictable since it varies greatly by patient. I am also told that several recent studies have suggested that leukotriene inhibitors such as Singulair appear to slightly reduce the recurrence of polyps and are especially effective for asthma in aspirin-sensitive patients (which people with recurring polyps often are). I have elected to steer clear of oral steroids since the polyps are "benign disease" in the sense that they are not associated with long-term health problems while long-termuse of steroids clearly are. If your sleep problems are due to nighttime asthma attacks, I found that Serevent eliminated this problem for me.
Response:
Prednisone does the following to my mother (she only takes it when she has to for an auto immune disease that effects her lungs): Depresses her immune system…any bug makes her sick so she has to go on antibioitcs all the time Loss of muscle tissue, so much so that her bones ache Swelling, the least of her problems YRMV, she may be more sensitive than others. You might want to look into what supplements you can take to counteract the side-effects. I too am taking Prednisone to reduce swelling and to help prevent polyps and am very concerned about long term use of this drug. I’ve been taking it now for about 6 weeks (30mg/day). Any info on this would be greatly appreciated! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -MKlopping wrote: > I have had rediculous polyp problems for the last 4 years. I have had rediculous polyp problems for the last 4 years. I have tried everything (2 surgeries, topical steriods, allergy shots, holistic approach) and I am still packed with these things. My physical (sleep deprevation, asthma) and mental situation is nearly unbearable and my doctor and I are considering low dose prednisone use on a constant basis. It is the only and I mean only thing that gives me any relief. I know all of the literature on prolonged systemic steriod use and its terrible side effects but I can not get info on what levels of prednisone over what period of time this occurs. Does anyone have any info or stories on this??? also: I have had 2 docs tell me that sometimes nasal polyps will "burn themselves out" or spontaneously go away just as sudden as they came. Can anyone else confirm this for me. I am about to walk down a path that I am very wary of but I am at my wits end. Thank you and God bless
