Question:
Does anyone ever have fits of anger that is not in their normal behavior? I nearly broke the phone slamming it down the other day. Had a right to be upset, but…….. Could it be the predinose or ritilan that I take. Any suggestions? Thanks, Rita
Response:
Way back when I first started on pred I had this. But it did not last long and I have had some oppisite reactions to pred. As I do not grow hair actually, it slowed way down and then the cytoxan made alot of it fall out. My daughter had to have a few Pred treatments like 3 day ones for asthma when she was younger and reacted the same way would just blow up. cindy

There have been times when I was way too angry over things, sometimes even when I wasn’t sure why I was angry about something. I think it’s partially meds and partially the illness doing something to the part of my brain that controls emotions. Because usually when I would be angry like that I was also shaky and light and noise was painful. The only med that ever helped that go away was valium but it’s hard to get those. Lately I just go in my room by myself and avoid everyone when I get like that so I can stay calm. You might want to take a look at your meds and ask the doc about it. Good luck. Yes, I Used to. For many years I would blow my stack without realizing it was happening. Since I’ve been taking wellbutrin (more than ten years) it happens only rarely and I get some warning – start shaking, get light-headed, sweat (like a low blood sugar reaction). When I feel myself getting close to exploding, I find food often helps, or I can take xanax which always stops it quite quickly – only problem with that is that I tend to get sleepy – but it’s better than completely losing my dignity ( and friends!) Good Luck, Jackie

Pred can certainly make you more anxious and probably could cause sudden anger. I don’t know about ritalin but I suppose that’s possible as I believe it is a stimulant. so the combination might also be an issue. Of course, there’s normal human frustration that can be blown out of proportion when we don’t feel good or are burned out fighting the physical battles. and lupus itself can have an influence on the chemical balance in the brain. Have you had symptoms of CNS lupus in the past? My "rages" have calmed significantly but are not gone – but mine are *definitely* cyclic. hormonal. Before going on b.c. pills i was all over the board because I wasn’t "regular" (23 day cycle with about 8-10 days of the worst part) so it was really tough to deal with the rage. It would hit me out of the blue – I’d be cooking or cleaning or just writing and someone would say something innocuous but I’d be so on edge that I’d lose it. I am still finding stains from the time I threw a glass of cran-apple juice across the den into the window (blinds down – geez what a mess). Fortunately I haven’t thrown or broken anything in several years.
knowing what they are makes it easier to cope with – when I didn’t understand how I went from 0 – 60 in one second it made it so much worse. Now that I have a better understand and can say "oh yeah, it’s day 14 or whatever… then I can get through it faster and with less pain for everyone. *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional. How much Prednisone are you on? That’s certainly a medication that can throw you off emotionally. When my daughter was on 40 mg./day, she said she felt like she felt so bad emotionally she didn’t know whether she wanted to curl up into a little ball and cry or stand in the corner and scream. That was extremely unusual for the cool, level headed sort of person she normally is. We brought it to her doctor’s attention, and he said it was a common occurence in his patients on higher doses of Prednisone. Fortunately, we were able to start tapering hers, so she was soon feeling much better. Other than Prednisone, unusual changes in emotion like that can also be related to lupus. Either way, it’s a good idea to let your doctor know as soon as possible how you’re feeling. Sandra
