Question:
Hi all:-) What do you think is the best but least addicting pain med. I am ready for a change. I think that it is taking more and more for mine to work. I go to a pain clinic and they are very very worried about addiction. Thanks! Judi
Hi Judi, You must define "addiction" before you can proceed. When using opioid drugs to relieve pain, addiction is not even part of the equation. If you are seeking drugs to withdraw from life and its responsibilities, then that is an addictive behavior. Taking pain medicine when you’re suffering has nothing to do with addiction. I recommend avoiding opiates/opioids if you can; but after trying many things that don’t work (or make you feel even worse), a full-agonist opiate/opioid is indicated. The proper dose is what works for the patient. You will become tolerant (you need more to get the same relief) over time, and you will have physical withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop using an opioid drug. These two occurrences are quite normal and to be expected, and should not be confused with addiction. Any full-agonist analgesic will produce tolerance and physical dependence. You have to weigh the benefits of relief with attendant side effects of tolerance and physical dependence, and compare that to suffering without medication, and then decide which is better for you. Using opioids every day is no picnic, but it will not make you an addict. I’ve done it for over twenty years. I’m a mess, but I’d be six-feet-under without pain med’s. I’m not addicted to anything but the will to live, in spite of twenty-five years of using opioid drugs to manage agonizing pain. Find a doctor who has read something in the past twenty years… - jqt –
