Question:

i have acute sinus infections, i also have irregular heart palpitations from according to the doctors, stress…..does anybody else out there have this problem…it seems to occure only when i get congested.

Response:

Is it possible you are taking alot of psuedephedrine when you get congested?  I have a mitral valve prolapse and if I take psuedephedrine and drink too much caffeine I’ll palpitate for days! Yes, I get this problem too and it’s totally unrelated to medication. I know this because it occurs even when I haven’t taken any meds for days. I had an eccocardiogram (sp?) and several other tests to confirm that my heart was okay, and it is. I only have the problem during a bad sinus infection or when my asthma acts up. When I’m well, it goes away. Lying down makes it worse. The palpitations don’t usually occur when standing or moving around. My doctor said not to worry about it, and that it’s not dangerous. Still, it would be interesting to know why it occurs.

I tried to post this once already but I don’t think it went thru.  So if it’s a duplicate…I apologize.   I have a mitral valve prolapse and my heart will palipitate for days if I get too much caffeine and psuedephedrine.  Are you taking in excess amounts of either of these two things? I have been suffering from chronic sinusitis for the past nine months and strangely enough started experiencing heart palpitations around the same time. The two seem to follow the same cycle (improve or deteriorate at the same time). I have seen several ENT specialists and a cardiologist and was told that the two conditions were probably unrelated. The heart palpitations were diagnosed as benign PVC’s (premature ventricular contractions) that can be triggered or aggravated by decongestants, caffeine, or stress. I do not use caffeine and stopped taking decongestants 7 months ago but the palpitations have not improved. I am scheduled for endoscopic sinus surgery in three months. Is there a possibility that an infection can sporadically affect the rythm of the heart and cause palpitations? I would like to hear from other people experiencing similar symptoms and the outcome. Regards, Michael

I think this happened to me too before I had sinus surgery and was on sudafed constantly (plus about a 6-pack of diet mountain dew daily….) I just thought I had turned neurotic from all the damn sinus suffering I went through before the surgery. Now I am pretty good. One cannot totally escape some sinus flarups living in lovely Ohio, home of "weather mood swings". Linda

You might want to raise the issue with the ent or your G.P.  Our family has a history of Mitral Valve Prolapse and arrythmia.  When medicated the erratic heartbeat  went away.
