Question:
The thing is, I don’t believe that ladybugs eat vegetation. If there are so many of them, they must be finding a lot of food. I think I prefer a ladybug infestation to one of aphids. Hell, the guy thinks that wasps are bad, too. I suspect that one gets rid of one’s ladybugs the same way one rids oneself of moles. Get rid of their food supply. — Bill (Skyclad) Hewitt
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My parents live in West Virginia. On visits to their home, I can see why Mr. Cavender believes them to be "pests". During visits at my parents’ home, there are ladybugs all over the walls, ceilings and floors. They are in the kitchen cabinets and closets. They drop into your plate or drinking glass. They’re all over your clothes. They are literally EVERYWHERE. It’s kinda spooky. Living in Indiana where there is no infestation, I adore my ladybugs. But then, i don’t have them living with me in my home either. They stay in the garden and are a welcomed visitor. I missed this initial thread, but it seems that Mr. Cavender was stating that the "specialists" should deal with "the reality of the #1 inspect pest in a lot of people’s lives". Anything in too great of numbers can’t be good. Perhaps the "specialists" to whom he refers should include both sides of the issue. How I can lure them to my garden and how he can get them out of his house. As a resident and home owner in WV, I am sick of reading about the virtues of Harmonia axyridis To respond by e-mail, please remove the text "NOSPAM" from the address.

Must not be the Indiana I know. Here in the southern part, they are terrible, and getting worse each year. Weren’t a problem until about five years ago when DNR released a bunch. They put them (or their eggs) in some kind of contraption that was connected to baloons, then released the baloons. Supposedly they were relesed in order to cut down on the number of ticks and turkey lice we have around here. Haven’t seen much of a reduction in either, but now we have a terrible lady bug problem. I truly wish the DNR would keep their grand ideas to themselves. Thanks to them we now have problems with deer, turkey, coyotes (which they released in the area), and of course lady bugs. And new problems on the horizon. A couple of years ago they release rattlesnakes in a few areas around here, so now we have that to look forward to. ChoJo

Hi, I don’t know how ro get rid of them, but by thinking of them as beautiful harmless helpful creatures makes me feel better about them. They won’t do any harm even in the house, but if they are just annoying by being present, you can give them a ride in a vacuum cleaner. If you have a Dustbuster, you can even release them outside. Save the ladybug! Bergall

Hi, I am being overrun by ladybugs. Every morning there are 100 plus ladybugs in my ffront windows. Does anyoe know of a nice way to get rid of them? I have a dog and a baby so I am reluctant to use pesticides. I saw an earlier post regardin this problem and no one knew how to get rid of them. I saw plenty of you who want them so if you can tell me how to save them for you and where to mail them you can have them. However I am really more interested in how to STOP them from coming into my house everyday.
The ladybugs are just following their instinct to find a warm crevice in which to spend the cold night. You need to find where they are getting in and block it off. In the meantime, getting rid of them is fairly easy: In the EARLY morning [before sunrise is best], slide a flat-flapped envelope up the window/screen, collecting the bugs as you go. Place the envelope outside; as the sun warms them, they will leave. Chris Owens

Hey! That’s a great idea! Send them to Maryland! I could use a lot to eat up the aphids in my garden! Nigel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I don’t know how to get rid of them except to send them all to me !! You are sitting on a gold mine. Many growers would love to have them. Down here in Florida they are hard to come by, REALLY ! Nobody carries them here that I know of. Maybe if you ran a ad in the paper, "free ladybugs" or "a dollar a bag" people would come and get them. Where are you at ?? Donna — Mike & Donna McCombs I am being overrun by ladybugs. Sure, take a soft brush and "whoosh" them out an open window. If you wait until the window warms up they’ll be more than happy to go. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – As a resident and home owner in WV, I am sick of reading about the virtues of Harmonia axyridis. Thousands of these PESTS have seriously impacted my health and quality of living. Features of Harmonia axyridis that "specialists" fail to mention: 1. They can bite. The bite becomes inflamed, and similar to wasp. The lady bug was observed delivering the bite on my friend’s forearm. 2. They have scent glands. When touching them or vacuuming them, the odor is terrible!! The scent is very irritating to someone with asthma (me) or other respiratory problems. 3. They cover windows with excrement which is very difficult to clean. 4. They de-value a cabin/home by their sheer numbers/presence. Thousands of Harmonia axyridis covering the sunny side windows in no way assists in selling a home. "Please overlook the insect infestation, please"….. In summary, it would be helpful in descriptions of this ‘garden friend’ if ’specialists’ would deal with the REALITY of the #1 insect pest in a lot of people’s lives. I now rank the wasp as #2. Hi Kim, I’m the one who also has this problem. The general consensus was to wait until it’s warm, when they will go outside. They have congregated in your house to wait out the winter. I’m in Michigan, and we have already noticed that ours aren’t so prevalent in the house any more. Good luck in the mail order business! Elizabeth
