Question:

Kris and all.. I received a response from the veterinary NG that it was the heated teflon that kills (the bird). I posted here for several reasons. 1) my friend who was illegally sprayed with pesticides many years ago, went on to develop numerous illnesses, one of which is SLE.  To this day, chemicals etc prevent her from enjoying life indeed even getting the simplest errrands done in stores. 2) if such poisons kill a bird, what is the affect of all the chemicals on our bodies (which are in our lives…pollution, perfumes, smoking, cleansers etc etc)? We have become complacent about these products and may not realize that the accumulations are at least exacerbating our illnesses, if not causing them.  IMO Case in point: guy puts drano in toilet, lets sit.   An hour later he plunges his hand in toilet to try and unplug what the drano didn’t.  He nos has severe damage to his hand/fingers..might lose a few (complacency? stupidity?) Instead of complaining to the companies, our best "voice" is to stop buying toxic products. IMO http://www.adbusters.org Jean now steps off her soap-box and says… If something toxic is necessary, I do the same as you, Kris, open all windows and move all pets to another area. Regards Jean

I don’t suppose you know which chemical/s your friend was sprayed with and which one/s she suspects of contributing to her SLE?  Also which ones she may be affected by in stores etc? Thanks, Chris.

Response:

Hi Chris, If you took a healthy tree and started pouring chemicals on it, day after day, and it finally got sick and died, would there be a way to tell which exact chemical did it? Or a way to tell if there was a chemical reaction between one or more chemicals and our own biochemistry that caused the disease or the death? As a doctor told me on another NG <snip> cancer is partly genetic and partly to do with one’s individual exposures to toxins<snip> I and my friend, Zinn, believe the same for most illnesses like Lupus, Fibromyalgia, thyroid and a number of other chronic illnesses.  The reasons doctors can’t make a distinct correlation is because we each go about our lives being exposed to our particular "peasoup" of chemicals.  I can’t even go to some drug stores any more, the perfume aisles make me ill. The answer to your question, if I understand it, I do NOT know of one chemical that causes SLE. Here’s her start on a web page. http://community-1.webtv.net/Zinn2of1/PandorasBoxof/ Some day, I hope that she will tell her full story on this page.  The link to the clinic is where numerous testing was done (biochemical).  There are other links to other like-minded people (Betty Bridges, R.N.) who posts on alt.med.allergy and alt.support.asthma? etc on her page.  Zinn is so sick that even chemicals at hospitals cause an assault on her body.  E-mail her from her web page if you wish.  She’s really a nice lady whose life has been destroyed and it all started with illegal spraying of pesticides (if memory serves, the company forgot to tell the employees to vacate the building). Have a look at this…from talk.environment and/or sci.environment Do any of us know, when we put food in our mouths, what is really in that food? This is interesting! I never would have thought a self cleaning oven would do this! I’ve got a dove and the minute I even use vinegar for cleaning I put him into another room and turn on the exhaust fan! In the pet store I worked at we were NEVER alowed to use any window cleaning solution to clean the windows in the bird area! WE always used a VERY diluted mix of something like 1 part vinegar to 3 parts warm water. NO cleaning supplies were to be used anywhere near them but I never would have given a thought to using a self cleaning oven! I thought the high intensity of heat was the only thing which burned off the oven grease! I gues I’m glad I read this thread! [...] As I understand it, these ovens work by having a special catalyst coating, which you raise to an extra- high temperature to make it self- clean.  If "first use" is hazardous as you describe, then you could get the same effect if the oven control jams – maybe even if you turn it up to full for Baked Alaska. Or if a child switches it on to clean? I’d say (a) the manufacturers need Speaking With (or suing?) (b) the leaflet needs amending (c) all such ovens should be "first used" immediately you get it. — Andy For Austria & its philately: <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/austamps/> For Lupus: <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/lupus/> For my other interests: <URL:http://www.kitzbuhel.demon.co.uk/>

Hello All, In today’s Ann Landers column, a writer describes how her 5-7 year-old parakeets died during/after her first use of a self-cleaning oven. There had been no warning on the oven leaflet but the writer apparently called the manufacturer and was told that upon first use, all windows should be opened and every living thing (not sure if this would include plants) evacuated because of "fumes" which are released during "first use". (The column is too long for me to type and can’t access it on-line).  No specific brand of oven was specified. In my opinion, all windows should be opened and everyone especially small pets, children, the elderly or those who have pre-existing health conditions, should evacuate with any use of this "convenience", ("first-use" notwithstanding).  I used to have one of these ovens and never used the feature, despite medium-heavy use of the oven.  Like most appliances in the kitchen, cleaning them with hot water and mild soap (immediately after use), taking care to use the correct pan sizes/covers and sometimes a bit of aluminum foil, obviates the need for this "convenience" and/or any heavy-duty chemicals (therefore no fumes, hidden or overt). Just my opinion. Regards Jean
