Question:
I am a 52-year-old professional singer who contracted an autoimmune disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, at the age of 30. Does anyone know of any research information discussing the relationship between autoimmune diseases and respiratory illness such as I described? Or has anyone a similar experience? John Frankhauser
john, many of us with autoimmune diseases have other allergies also. In my case my other allergies preceded my RA. But the sinusitis, asthma, and other sensitivities have increased. i don’t know if there is any research or not. i also used to say that antihistamines were useless. This last year my RD told me about Antihistamine 1 and 2. I take both kinds of antihistimine and they work. You might consult with your doctor and see if you can try this for those times when it becomes really bad. The second antihistamine is pepcid. Response:
I am a 52-year-old professional singer who contracted an autoimmune disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, at the age of 30. I have the usual manifestations of AS including fatigue and intestinal problems. Concurrent with the onset of AS, I developed what seems to be a dysfunctional immune system that leaves me susceptible to every respiratory virus I encounter. Also, I have numerous chemical sensitivities, am somewhat allergic to some things, like molds, and in addition, seem to have allergic symptoms that have no known cause and are apparently not IgE mediated. Antihistamines do little good. After several years, chronic sinusitis developed, eventually requiring surgery. Does anyone know of any research information discussing the relationship between autoimmune diseases and respiratory illness such as I described? Or has anyone a similar experience?
