… if you drink turtle blood or snort elephant snot but there are so damn many charlatans out there just trolling with magic elixir. There are an infinite number of MLMs out there all selling happy juice. I have no doubt there are some "potions" that are of value. You may choose to blindly throw them down but I still prefer to see some reviewed evidence they have some value. Old and Conservative! You bet your health I am! Phen fen was the latest wonder…..
You know, this is like the UFO phenomena… Of all the bogus claims, it only takes one *real* UFO to rock this world. Same too with performance enhancement or well being supplements. Of all the formulas out there, if only one helps my running and/or provides a feeling of wellness, then it’s worth it. That’s why I think you owe it to yourself, and certainly the group, to thoroughly investigate claims *yourself* before publicly condemning anything new, or any new application of something old, as "magic elixir" or worse, akin to "snorting elephant snot." for me, i notice if i run early in the morning, i do great..nothing in the stomach..if there is anything which needs to be wasted, it is done prior to my run (usually in some marathon programs it will suggest having that last bowel movement in the morning and then head to the starting line or something like that)
to add to this, if you have problems with bowel movements in the morning (remember you have to experiemnt in the training) then try a fiber laxative probably the morning before. fiber laxatives take 12 to 24 hours (read the label to find out for sure!!) to form the bulk and get out of the system. so the morning before the run she should be ready to have a cleansing bowel movement if you run in the evening, then just keep in mind to read the label, find out what the approximate time is for the laxative to ..well. "synthesize" and then experiment with it to see if it helps. in the same way, you don’t need to use a fiber laxative..you can also just experiment with the diet.. i.e. "if i eat powerbars X hours before bedtime, i notcie i am ready to have a bowel movement 30 min into my run, so possibly i need to take the powerbar X+Y hours before bedtime"

1) It could be your getting use to exercise 2) You could have Exercise Induced Bronchospasm (EIB) or EI-asthma without having asthma at rest. 3) It could be an allergic reaction to something in the air (even without EIB, or this can exacerbate EIB). If it is cool outside and dry, this might be affected even more. Hmmm, did you get a recent check up? I have allergies, I am not a happy camper when I start my run early in the morning because I am so congested, I cough and stuff, but it is my allergies causing this. I suppose when you first start running you can feel a little burning in your lungs and discomfort. If your health is good and you didnt just give up smoking and you dont have bronchitis or any other kind of lingering illness, you should see it disappear. If not, have a doctor check you out. Have your Dr. check it out – it sounds like EIA (exercise induced asthma) – I have had it as long as I can remember, but just finally got it diagnosed a couple of years ago. While training for the1994 NYC Marathon, I experienced the same problem. The trainer(sports doctor) for the Leukemia Society Team informed me that this is a common problem and is associated with a gland reaction. For 90% of the people it is treatable by taking 3 Advil (No other brand!), roughly 1 hour before you run. This will elimate the problem for about 3 hours or so. Should this not work, there is a prescription drug available for this condition. Good luck – it worked for me and over time I tested the reaction and I needed to take the Advil less. Stephanie

An experienced marathoner friend of mine always drank a glass of cold water an hour before running. The cold water seemed to trigger the "intestinal reflexes" so he could go before he ran.

This is normal (apparently). Take the example of the womens race, Catherina McKiernan and Liz McColgan in 1st and 2nd place. Both got a very loud call of nature after 10 miles or so, but just fought it. It happens. Allegedly, when she finished McKiernan would not accept any congratulations, stretch, sit down, take a drink or anything until she had gone to the toilet. McKiernan’s problem was "number two"s. Most other marathoners who get the need for a number one during a race just do it on the move (I am led to believe). Try it – practice makes perfect! what time of the day does she run and when does she eat related to when she runs? you have to experiment with food and how it affects your body . for me, i notice if i run early in the morning, i do great..nothing in the stomach..if there is anything which needs to be wasted, it is done prior to my run (usually in some marathon programs it will suggest having that last bowel movement in the morning and then head to the starting line or something like that) a lot of fiber/carbs in the diet might cause the bowel movements to come more frequently. i find exercise (weights or running) also act as good laxatives just because all the body processes are sped up . so it really comes down to food types. you may want to think of zone dieting if she is not on it. i.e. 40%carb, 30%protein, 30%fat. with less carb, more pro, and more fat, bowel movements will probably be less . as far as the meal before her run. is the worried because she doesn’t want to have to stop? or because she will have to use the bathroom? most half marathons will have porta potties along the way so if that’s what she’s worried about she shouldn’t have to be (you may want to call teh race organizer to ask about this). if it’s just because she doesn’t want to have to stop, then look at the diet -ben

Your basic fiber or brewers yeast tablets might help if she can handle those. As we get older our system runs slower. I coach older athletes to have their last big meal on the noon the day before a race…then drink carbo drink (I like simple cranberry juice)…have a very small supper…maybe a bananna…and maybe half a sport bar for breakfast….just some thoughts..

Looks like her bowels need to be trained! Drinking more water, increasing fiber, and getting in the habit of moving your bowels after a specific meal each day will eventually solve the problem. But my question is why is she not posting this question instead of you?

I also suffer from that problem. It restricts me to running laps of a 2 1/2 mile loop so I can stop at various places when necessary. before a big run, I have coffee about 11/2 hours prior to then don’t eat anything just so I can venture off the base. makes a 2-3 hour run a little more difficult but doesn’t leave me feeling "desperate".

A few more data points Mike. Is she jumping out of bed in the morning for her run or is she up for many hours? If the fomer, many find they need an hour or so before to kick start the bowels. I also find that some java also helps the roto-rooter. If the later maybe some words on diet. She wants to build for a half marathon and then further but the worry associated with this problem is a barrier.
It’s not fun to have to hit the woods or find the portolet. They are never where you need them when the URGE strikes.

Something that never fails for me is to drink some water or sports drink before my warm up (~ 8oz). Then, part of my warm up includes 2 sets of 30 reps of sit-ups, leg raises, leg extensions, and the classic scissors exercise. If you don’t have to clear the old guts after that, see your doctor. My suggestion is don’t worry about it. With training, her abdomen and other muscles will be stronger and she eventually won’t get a bowel movement. I mean I used to have that problem too when I started running about three years ago. I don’t have that problem now. CGYH

I’ve heard this a fairly common problem, so at least she’s not suffering alone (the first two women home in the London Marathon had similar problems, and the winner didn’t manage to make it to the loo in time after the finish..). This may sound really stupid, but is she sure she doesn’t just need a good fart, rather than the toilet? That aside, I’m not sure more fibre, which someone else suggested, is all that good an idea really. I think I read somewhere that a small dose of Immodium (an anti-trots pill you can buy over the counter) can help, but its probably a good idea only to use that for special occasions, e.g. long races, and definitely to ask a doctor beforehand. Anyhow, hope she manages to sort it out. Anthony
