Question:
Hi Have any of you tried anything for allergies that has worked ? I’ve tried sudafed and benedryl and they don’t work at all. In Northern California we are having a real rough year and I’ve had to keep a kleenex under my nose all day for a non-stop drip for last three weeks. Doc doesn’t want to give me anything to dry it out my nose because I get nose-bleeds I would truly appreciate any help thanks Ruth
Response:
Ruth, Hello there, I got a script from my doc for Flonase, it is good and works well, it does not make your nose dry or even sore when you use it. You see it advertised on TV also, and hubby and I and sis use it quite nicely. 2 puffs up the nose hole one time a day. Also my sister has allergies quite bad and she uses clariton or clariton D, the later dries you up big time. All need scriptions… have a good day, and sneeze no more…. Puffs are the best LOL janers
Response:
My hubby has really bad allergies. I got something last year for him at the health food store. Its called Hayfever. He has never had anything work better. No adverse side effects either. Good Luck

for nasal allergies, nothign has ever topped a nasal corticosteroid for me. Used to use beconase, now on vancenase which is comparable (had to quit using the beconase because my insurer decided to only cover one version of this med). Anyway – the steroid dose is inconsequential – so there is no concern of the known steroid problems. (By the way, Flonase is a similar drug). For comparison: Vancenase puts 84 mcgs of corticosteroid into your sinuses – a microgram is 1/1000th of a mg. Oral steroids are in the range of 3-60 mg. milligrams. Also, the nasal application of this tiny amount of steroid does not get into the blood stream for more than that the area of the sinuses and other nasal passages. Some *tiny* amount might get into the throat but not enough for our adrenals to even recognize a change. I have been on this type of spray for over 9 years. It has been a life-changing drug. Prior to using it, every spring and fall were pure hell for me. concentration, patience, energy were drained from me by fighting "hayfever". I have gotten out of the habit a couple of times only to remember how much allergies used to really bug me. for other areas that such meds can’t impact – such as the eyes and skin, Claritin has shown to be very effective for myself and my daughter. Not the Claritin-D which has a decongestant in it. That does cause drowsiness but Claritin itself does not. I take it only as needed – which is very rare – usually only when my eyes are acting up and itching. But my daughter takes it daily as a preventive (she has asthma and other allergy responses). I don’t know anything about the alternative treatments – many might be very good. I just know what has worked for me. Some "tasters" (my daughter) find the "taste" (a phenomenon that is not actually taste in the sense that the med never touches the tongue but is taste in that the sensors for taste are triggered) of nasal corticosteroids to be unacceptable. But for me, it’s worth it. Sometimes it *does* sting when it first goes in – for some folks. There is some risk of nosebleed (though I’ve never had any) and I think that overall the reduction in nosebleeds because of less irritation to the sinuses from the allergies is well worth that minimal risk. it takes about 1-2 weeks for these corticosteroids to kick in completely – depends on the individual. Claritin works immediately for me and is only taken once a day. (10 mgs??) Claritin rarely causes drowsiness or dryness as it is not related to benadryl and the like in terms of it’s action. finally – of course, make sure that whatever you are taking (traditional or alternative) will not interfere with any of your other meds. Antihistamines, even claritin, can tend to interact so talk to the doc and pharm first. *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.
