Question:

I am trying to stay on a low carb diet and am experiencing some difficulty…. After about three days I CRAVE fruit, mostly oranges. I also experience a burning sensation in my throat that no amount of water will extinguish. Needless to say, after a couple of days of this I blow it. Having said all that, I know this is the right diet for me. I generally feel better, lose the bloated feeling and kiss the heartburn goodbye. Does anyone else have this problem or clues as to how I may overcome it. Thanks for your help. That burning sensation in your throat is disturbing. Are you getting all of your vitamins and other supplements in? Perhaps you should see a doctor. -georg

Sounds to me like acid reflux. I have this – in me it’s just something I was born with, the valve at the top of my esophagus is "weak" and stomach acid can come back up into the esophagus.  Before low-carbing I was on Dr’s orders to take Pepcid morning and night to keep this to a minimum.  Now I take no meds, and I don’t have the burning sensation any more!  I have found that drinking enough water is vital.  When the burning hits, it’s basically too late to do much of anything.  But if you keep drinking all along, it helps a lot.  Check with your doc, though.  Reflux was dangerous for me, because somehow, I don’t really understand how, it aggravates the hell out of my asthma.  It can also damage the tissue of the esophagus, if it goes on long enough, untreated.  Try drinking your water, and talk to your doc, would be my advice. — Lisa A. 298/249/160 "You better have a good sense of humor, or you’re gonna hurt yourself badly getting angry at me." ~ Ted Nugent

If I were experiencing what you are I would take some vitamin C and drink tons of water.  If you are taking vitamin C then maybe you should just eat what your body is telling you to and count the carbs.  A visit to the Doc may be in order.
