Question:

Got up this morning to do my first race in almost 10 years. Pouring rain and the forecast was for rain all day. Since I am coming back from a number of injuries I had planned to alternate run/walk. Plus I started having a mild asthma attack and couldnt’ breath too well. I had hoped for a time of 35 minutes and did 32:22. The friends I went with beat their previous times too.

You had all the bad luck of the world against you and did it under the time you’d hoped for, that is really great! Congratulations! Elisabeth

Response:

It was Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth, NH. They stamped your number when you registered to get a free one. Plus they had some great caesar pasta salad, nachos and salsa, spicy cold noodle salad, then they had the "health food" for the people who were being good, fruit and bagles. They had the awards inside the brewery due to the rain. I am sure they made out great today.

That sounds great – although I find it hard to eat for a while if I’ve been running hard. Bet I could down a couple of cold ones though :-) In fact my next two races should allow me to do just that – my 10k has an awards ceremony as it’s the last of an eight race series and I’m staying in a hotel that’s only 400 yards from the finish of the Gt N. Run. By the time I cross the line it will be late enough in the day to drink without looking like a drunk :-) charlie

Response:

Congratulations, Michele! Shame about the bad weather and your asthma acting up…. but it’s great that you stuck to it and finished. I guess I’ve just been very lucky…. never had a race in the rain (knock wood). Cam

Surprisingly there didn’t seem to be a lot of no shows. Even the little kids were still running. Since I am coming back from a number of injuries I had planned to alternate run/walk. Well, I couldn’t really force myself to walk much because it was so cold and I was completely drenched, I just wanted to finish. My shorts were plastered to me and my feet were squishing in my shoes. Plus I started having a mild asthma attack and couldnt’ breath too well. I had hoped for a time of 35 minutes and did 32:22. The friends I went with beat their previous times too. The post race food was great, the race was sponsored by a local brewery. All in all, it was a good day, glad I brought a change of warm clothes. Knees are kind of sore but hopefully not any worse than before.

Thanks, I am in NH. It has been raining off and on for a week now and forecast is for more for this week. Great job, Michele!! That’s a great time for weather like that. Coming back from long-term injury, you should be awfully proud. — David (in Hamilton, Ont) "Why should I practice running slow?
