Researchers have yet to find an asthma cure. Asthma is a very serious condition that leads to inflammation of the airways. This makes breathing difficult, and or even impossible. Asthma attacks can range in severity from mild to severe. An asthma attack can put you in the hospital, or even in the grave. Scientists don’t know why this happens. Fortunately, you can keep it under control. Medication will decrease swelling, and muscle constriction in the bronchial passages.
People with chronically inflamed airways seem to overreact to usually harmless substances that would not affect people with healthy bronchial tubes. You may become increasingly sensitive to the things that trigger your asthma. People with asthma also suffer from bronchospasm, which is a condition that makes breathing more difficult as the muscles surrounding the airways constrict. It becomes a viscous circle. People with asthma may find it more difficult to exhale than inhale. Signs of asthma include wheezing, coughing, and breathlessness.
Before scientists can figure out an asthma cure, they need to find the reason why it occurs. Researchers aren’t sure why certain people suffer from inflamed and constricted airways. It may be genetic. If one of your parents has asthma, the risk of you developing the disease increases by 30 percent. The risk jumps to 70 percent if both parents are asthmatic. If your parents don’t have the condition, the odds are reduced drastically to just six per cent.
There are many things that can trigger an asthma attack. Some people find exercising can trigger asthma. Cold dry air increases the chances of an attack. Pollution, smoke and allergens can also cause airways to swell in response. Many people will find their asthma symptoms will decrease if they try to avoid the things that set it off. It is a good idea to take note of the circumstances surrounding an asthma attack
Although there is no asthma cure, there are a variety of asthma medications to control attacks. Most people diagnosed with asthma will be prescribed asthma inhalers. You will receive controller medication and reliever medication. Controller medication is usually a small dose of corticosteroids that you will inhale once or twice daily. This is usually morning, and night. The corticosteroids go directly to your lungs to target inflammation. You may be prescribed medication with brand names such as Flovent, Pulmicort, or Aerobid. Inhaled medication is superior to oral drugs because it acts quickly on swollen air passages. It also bypasses the liver which might break it down until it is not effective. There are also fewer side effects for inhaled steroids. Oral steroids gave been found to cause other problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, bruising and delayed growth. Fortunately, researchers find that inhaled medication does not cause those side effects to the same extent. You doctor will try keep the dose as low as possible to control your asthma. You should also rinse your mouth after inhaling your medication.
Your other asthma inhaler is used when you actually start to have an asthma attack. This reliever medication acts to relax constricted muscles in your bronchial tubes to immediately help you breath easier. Asthma inhalers come in two forms. One is a pressurized aerosol can containing propellant and asthma medication. You place the mouthpiece in your mouth, press down on the canister, and breathe in a measured dose of medicine. There are also inhalers containing powdered medication. These medications are not an asthma cure. But until researchers come up with an asthma cure, they can keep your asthma under control, and prevent attacks.
